BACnet MS/TP - or "Mulitdrop Serial Bus / Token Passing" is a RS-485 physical layer designed to support multiple devices sharing a RS-485 bus. It is primarily used for small controllers such as for VAVs, RTUs, sensors or actuators.

The language has changed to avoid the derogatory Master-Slave/Token Passing used in the past, but it will take a while for the industry to migrate from this embedded use of the language.
